WINTER TIRES: ESSENTIAL IN QUEBEC

WINTER TIRES: ESSENTIAL IN QUEBEC

Our winters put our vehicles to the test and require adequate maintenance of the car without neglecting anything, for our safety. Once we have taken care of the mechanics, we have to worry about the handling of icy or snowy surfaces. But are we really aware of the reasons why?

IN QUEBEC, WINTER TIRES ARE MANDATORY

In 2008, the Quebec government made winter tires mandatory for all passenger vehicles. Changing winter tires before the December 1st deadline is written in the Highway Safety Code. The law also stipulates that you must drive with regulation tires between December 1st and March 15th.

Note that the SAAQ recognizes studded tires as winter tires. It allows their use from October 15th to May 1st. Tires approved by the SAAQ bear the pictogram of the mountain with the snowflake inside it.

THE SAFETY OF WINTER TIRES

CAA QUEBEC REMINDS US THAT:
“WHEN THE TEMPERATURE DROPS BELOW 7°C, ALL-SEASON TIRES START TO LOSE THEIR ELASTICITY, RESULTING IN POORER TRACTION, HANDLING AND BRAKING ABILITY[1]”.

Yet, bear in mind that the safety features found in today’s vehicles give their full potential only if you have tires that provide adequate traction.

IF YOU DON’T HAVE WINTER TIRES...

Quebec studies have confirmed the safety of winter tires. While no demerit points are registered on a driver’s file for violating the law, a fine of up to $300 (plus fees) can be imposed.
